…over designer made?
Well if you are then you must have a really valid reason and from talking to my friends and running this site I know that price is always high on the list when it comes to choices.
But if you are seriously considering flat pack furniture, then there are few salient points that you need to keep in mind.
Medium Density Fibreboard – MDF
Basically MDF is a blend of different woods that have been broken down and blended together using a heavy duty resin. This type of man made wood has acquired a bad name for itself over the years and in my mind that has not always been a fair call. MDF has its place in furniture creation simply because of its flexibility and the cheap price at which it can be manufactured.
You can get fairly high quality MDF and really poor MDF. A fair amount of flat pack furniture unfortunately makes use of the poorer and cheaper MDF for obvious reasons. Again, if you’re considering flat pack, keep in mind that whatever you buy probably won’t last a life time.
Assembling Your Flat Pack
Truth be told I’ve tried to assemble flat pack for myself and for friends and I’ve never really been that good at it. I can invariably get the thing up and to hang together but would I really want to put books on a bookshelf that sways when you touch it and would I really want to sit on a chair that rocks? Basically you really need to be good at putting together flat pack to get the best out of it or you’re going to struggle. So if you’re not very adept at putting together flat pack then either hire someone to assemble your furniture or don’t buy it.
Is it Unique & What Does it Look Like?
Another point to remember with this kind of furniture is that it will a finish and a uniqueness that designer furniture gives you every time. If you shop in a store like Ikea, that don’t get me wrong has some wonderful pieces and who understands the customers who buy from them, then you’re not going to get a piece of furniture that only you and a few more people own. You’re going to end up with a mass produced piece that thousands and more have.
All that said, flat pack furniture definitely has a place in the market place, if it didn’t then it wouldn’t be so popular, what you need to work out is if it’s the best option for you at this point in your furnishing life?
